Bootable USB Sticks

Want your USB to work as a Bootable Disk. Then  try this on........

Preparing the USB Memory stick

First, the memory stick needs to be prepared. Make sure you don’t have anything important on it since it will be totally erased.

Put your USB disk in the computer, and wait for it to be recognized. Then get to a command line (Make sure you run that as an administrator)

Type:

DISKPART <ENTER>

This will launch the disk partition program. You need to be real careful here since you can blow away partitions and drives of any drive on your system. Start out by listing the current drives on your system

LIST DISK <ENTER>

You should be able to identify your drive from this list:

So looking at the list, I know that DISK 1 is my flash drive. Make sure you properly identify your drive, or risk destroying important data.

Next, lets run the commands that will prepare your drive.

Note that disk1 is what we determined before. If by chance you have a nice fat USB hard drive sitting on your desk and it happens to be disk 1, and not your flash drive – you will erase everything!

Be careful!

Type this into DISKPART:

select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit

Now your flash drive is bootable.

Make the Drive Bootable

Next we’ll use the bootsect utility that comes on the Vista or Windows 7 disk to make the flash drive bootable.  In the same command window that you were using in Step 1:

  1. Insert your Windows Vista / 7 DVD into your drive.
  2. Change directory to the DVD’s boot directory where bootsect lives:
    d:
    cd d:\boot
  3. Use bootsect to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for a Vista/7 image. I’m assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G:\ by the computer:
    bootsect /nt60 g:
  4. You can now close the command prompt window, we’re done here.

Copying the Install Disk

Now the disk is bootable. Get your Windows 7 Install disk and copy the entire disk to your flash drive. With my computer, F: was the flash drive, and G: was the DVD ROM drive with the install disk. Copy the files from the command line like this:

xcopy g:\ f:\ /s/e/f e:\

Installing From Flash

Now, reboot and go into your BIOS and make sure it is set to boot from flash devices. I wish I could create a nice tutorial for this but there are so many different BIOS menus it would be difficult. Here is what mine looks like:

So make sure it is the first boot option, and you should be ready to install Windows 7 right from a flash drive. Save your changes, reboot…and install goodness will commence.

So you may be asking. How fast is it? Is it slow as Vista or Better than XP? I will let you know next time....

Remove autorun virus

Autorun.inf is a text file which instruct Windows about the execution priority when an operation is performed . Autorun command is associated with CDs ,DVDs, USB etc. If autorun.inf  is specified in a CD or DVD , Windows then reads and follows the specific instructions this file defines.

Autorun virus (Actually its a worm) manipulates the autorun.inf files . Autorun worm is capable of spreading through computer networks and USB disks . It will either replace or modify the existing settings in these devices . It is very difficult to remove autorun virus as it modifies many of the system settings . It will block access to internet , disable show hidden files and folders , blocks access to antivirus websites , disable msconfig etc .Formatting Windows will not work for the effective removal of autorun virus as the infection still exists in other hard disk partitions .

Autorun virus : Symptoms of infection

Hard disk autoplay
msconfig  disabled
Hidden files and folders disabled .

Remove Autorun virus

1.Get autorun virus removal tool.

2.Now Press Win+R and enter cmd open Windows command prompt .
Now we are about to list hard disk files from command prompt .
for C drive type dir c:\ /a/w

remove autorun virus
If Autorun virus is present , It will get listed as shown above . There would be many other files like onlinegames , kavo.exe,.vbs , Heap41a , newfolder.exe,.com, ppt.exe etc .

These files include read only, archive, system and hidden file attributes associated with them.
So in next step we will remove these restrictions from the above suspicious files .
attrib -s -h -r c:\autorun.inf
or attrib -s -h -r c:\autorun.vbs ( Change the hard disk partitions as required)

Now remove all those files associated with autorun virus using del instruction .

Del autorun.inf or Del kavo.exe ( repeat the procedure for all the files and hard drives )

Or you can automate the process by notepad

dir c:\ /a/w
attrib -s -h -r c:\autorun.inf
del autorun.inf
dir d:\ /a/w
attrib -s -h -r d:\autorun.inf
del autorun.inf
dir e:\ /a/w attrib -s -h -r d:\autorun.inf
del autorun.inf
(Add the necessary hard disk partitions and files as per requirement ). Now copy the completed document in notepad and save as remove.bat . This file will remove all the autorun virus traces on execution .

After removing all the infected autorun virus files from hard drives , execute autorun virus removal tool on step 1 to remove further traces .

3. Repair registry to enable hidden files and folders .
Press Win+R and enter regedit . Now this will open the Windows registry . Move on to the following registration entries .

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advanced>Folder>Hidden>SHOWALL

Autorun virus usually alter this registration entry . Double click on CheckedValue and enter value data as 1 .  Now you would be able to enable hidden files and folders .

4. Turn off autorun feature in Windows .
This will avoid the execution of existing autorun worms in a PC and also one on USBs and CDs .
Copy the following command in notepad and save as removeautorun.reg

REGEDIT5 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @=”@SYS:DoesNotExist”

5. Restart your PC for the complete removal of Autorun virus .

Do at your own risk.........................

Sometimes you might want to disable all or a few options in Desktop Properties to restrict users or you might want to enable those options in case they are disabled by your system administrator or a virus infection.

Following tutorial will help you in enabling or disabling all or a particular option in Desktop Properties:

NOTE: This tutorial will work for almost all Windows versions.

A. Disable Themes Tab in Desktop Properties:

Open regedit and goto:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ Explorer

If "Explorer" key is not present, then create it. Now in right-side pane, create a new DWORD value NoThemesTab and set its value to 1 to disable it.
